Joanna Chiu
Managing Partner

Former award-winning investigative journalist and author Joanna Chiu is Managing Partner at Nüora Global, where she advises organizations navigating the intersection of politics, technology, media, and geopolitical risk.

She builds bespoke teams from Nüora Global’s international network of Asia researchers and leading subject-matter experts — tailored to each client’s needs rather than drawn from a fixed roster. Drawing on 15+ years of newsroom leadership and international reporting experience, she manages complex, high-stakes projects across time zones, cultural contexts, and regulatory environments.

Chiu has reported extensively across mainland China, Hong Kong, Macau, and Mongolia for leading media outlets including The Economist, The Globe & Mail, AFP, The Guardian, Foreign Policy, AP, and the South China Morning Post. She is a frequent commentator for broadcasters such as the BBC, NPR, CBC, and CTV.

She previously served as B.C. bureau chief for the Toronto Star, reported on international affairs, and led China technology coverage at Rest of World. She is also the founder and co-chair of NüVoices, an editorial platform that elevates diverse expert perspectives on China.

As a consultant and project lead, Chiu has managed global research teams and conducted fieldwork involving Chinese companies on behalf of corporations, NGOs and research institutes. She has authored public reports commissioned by organizations including PEN America and provided legal expert witness reports for law firms.

Recognition

Chiu’s reporting and analysis have been recognized with the Kathy Gannon Legacy Award, the CEMA Award, and a Human Rights Press Award. China Unbound was awarded the 2022 Shaughnessy Cohen Prize for Political Writing for excellence in political writing.
